The REFAK (ReferentInnen Akademie) is the Train the Trainers program in Austrian Trade Union Education. It is a cooperation project between the Chamber of Labour (AK) and the Association of Austrian Trade Union Education (VÖGB). It is managed by a cooperative pedagogical management team of AK Vienna and VÖGB. REFAK is aimed at all people who are or will be active in trade union adult education as trainers, speakers or lecturers. The selection of the participants is carried out in close cooperation with the responsible trade union secretaries.
Where do I start? In a world where so many things don’t seem the same as they did a few weeks ago? With a hint that we celebrate 30 issues of #visdo with this blog post? I’ve decided not to put too much emphasis on one or the other topic this time, but instead to give you a tool to celebrate the small #visdo anniversary – to find the right words in a time when many discussions are shifting to the online world and there’s so much to say. And that with comics!

For years, methods from the family of constellations have been THE hits in adult education. In the meantime, participants sometimes roll their eyes full in an annoyed manner when they are announced. .
Experienced seminar participants know the situation: you enter the seminar room, look for a seat, cast curious glances at the others present, participants and trainers…
And then it starts: the inevitable round of introductions… In turn, everyone says what their names are, which union and which company they come from and what they expect from the seminar that is just beginning. Preprogrammed boredom…
Biography work: deep analysis, own experience, socialisation, questioning stereotypes
Biography work is ideal for an in-depth analysis of the theme of gender. Make sure that the participants engage with the topic from their own experience.
The following five exercises should support participants when dealing with their own biography and help them to critically reflect on gender roles, socialisation and language.
Which ingredients does the “magic potion” countervailing power consist of?
cc: REFAK
We all know the stories of Asterix and Obelix, who, with a mixture of belligerence, self-confidence, shrewdness, cunning and not to forget the dosed use of their magic potion, defy the superiority of the Romans again and again and stand up to them in their legendary Gallic village. There is also a superiority in the conflict of interests between capital and labour. It is an asymmetrical, unequal struggle for participation and fair distribution under capitalist conditions. This makes it all the more important to know exactly what the ingredients are and to be able to analyse them, from which we can brew our “magic potion” “countervailing power”.
In light of the upcoming EU elections, the question that is more pressing than ever is the extent to which right-wing extremists and far-right parties are burdening the political climate in Europe and, above all, how the trade union movement is confronting the phenomenon. Beginning with an initiative from the ETUI (European Trade Union Institute) a group of trade unionists from Belgium, France, Austria and Sweden are offering an overview of existing and planned trade union initiatives against right-wing extremism in Europe. This will offer opportunities in learning new methods, as well as exchanging experiences with others.
As part of the Anti-Racism Toolbox, we would like to present individual methods and initiatives. Taking the European idea into account, it is possible that a number of languages may appear on the page :-).
Participants in training courses, seminars and particularly longer courses complain about annoying methods. However, those who are annoyed and allergic to certain methods learn poorly or, in the worst case, not at all! With our small series on the subject of “Annoying methods” we would like to support trainers in avoiding allergic reactions and point out possible alternatives!
